Our Mission
Scattered across the vast expanse of Alaska and Northern Canada, there are literally hundreds of remote villages without a Gospel Witness or Bible preaching church. The very large majority of these villages are inaccessible by the road system. In Alaska alone there are over 230 communities that can only be reached by air or sea.
These remote communities are a very need mission field. Very few have a Gospel preaching church of any kind. Many have never heard a clear presentation of the Gospel. Because of this, spiritual darkness and its devastating consequences are are the norm for many. Alcohol drugs and abuse are rampant. Tragically, the suicide rate in the native villages is one of the highest in the world, over seven times the national average. Only the light of the Gospel of Jesus Christ can offer real hope and pierce the darkness.
Because of the challenges of transportation and distance, evangelism and church planting efforts in these villages have been hindered greatly. Often times a missionary may faithfully minister in a certain village for years but have no way to effectively reach out to other nearby villages. In Southeast Alaska where our ministry is based, most of the villages are on islands and it typically takes anywhere from several days to a week to get to one of these villages by the ferry system, even when it is only 100 miles away.
But our Lord’s command is clear, he said “Go”. The question is how do we get there? We believe that where the Lord guides, he also provides a way. That is where aviation comes in. With a small airplane, travel time is reduced from days to an hour or two. This makes it possible to minister in multiple villages and establish a circuit of ministry. A small airplane makes possible a ministry in the remote villages that would be impossible otherwise.
Back in 2002, Bro. Mark Bach first came to Alaska. It was then that the Lord began to burden his heart for these unreached villages and to impress on him the need for an airplane to reach them with the Gospel. However, He also saw that utilizing aviation on the mission field is difficult due to the the expense and burden it posses to the missionary. That’s when he felt led of the Lord to start the Baptist Evangelism Aviation Ministry, even though he had no aviation background himself and no love, (or even like) for flying. The vision of this ministry is to get the Gospel to remote regions, utilizing aviation, (or whatever form of transportation is most efficient and effective) through the partnership of likeminded churches.
Our purpose is not flying supplies. Others have done that but now, in the north at least, there is the commercial infrastructure in place for shipping supplies to missionaries that is cheeper than it can be done by a small plane. It is our belief that the role of missionary aviation has shifted largely from a support and supply role to an active transportation role. The need, and our goal, is for small airplanes to carry small evangelism and church planting teams from remote village to village, carrying the Gospel of Christ to the lost, sharing the message of salvation with the perishing. Then as folks are saved, our desire is to invest in discipleship of the new believers and work to establish a circuit of bible studies and eventually churches in the different villages. Really, the mission is not very far removed from the ministries of the old circuit riders of the past. The only real difference is our “mule” has a propeller!
The Lord has graciously and miraculously provided our ministry with an airplane and the funds to either outfit it with floats or to sell it and purchase the needed airplane. We are presently praying and asking the Lord to provide the funds for the land and hanger needed to base this ministry in Southeast Alaska, where we have served for the last fifteen years.
Would you consider being a part of this ministry? Though the airplane represents the most time and cost effective way to reach these villages, it is not free. Through your partnership and the partnership of other likeminded churches, we will be equipped and enabled to reach further than ever before.
But most importantly, We need your prayer support. The work of God goes forward through the prayers of HIs people. Pray that God would enable us to effectively minister in the remote regions of the North. We must have His help and blessing if there is to be any lasting fruit! And finally, pray for the lost. Pray that he would open doors and hearts to the message of the Gospel, that souls will be saved and bible believing Baptist churches established in these villages for the Glory of God.
